DAVID GERSTEIN

ABOUT

đź–ŤFirst in Jerusalem, David Gerstein studies at the Belazel Academy before flying to Paris in order to study at the Beaux-Arts in 1960. Two years later, he flies to New York where he pursues his formation at the Art Student league. But it is not enough for David Gerstein who participates to the Florence Biennale in 1972 and get his diploma from the St Martin's School of Art in London in 1974. In his art, he tries to mingle his knowledge of art with the culture of his adopted cities, where open-mindedness is total. His great skills enable him to use all kinds of supports : engravings, sculptures, and drawings hold no secrets to him, as well as wall scupltures. Moreover, Gerstein started out first as a draughtsman for children, and his rewarded by the Illustration award of the Museum of Israel. David Gerstein's will is to abolish the frontier between urban art and the art that can only be found in museums. His works must speak to everybody, from Art professionals to novices. As a result, he uses figurative style and joyous colors echoing nature. He represents playful scenes of daily life in movement as a way of denouncing our contemporary way of living but also as to add a bit of life to its sculptures thanks to a slight touch of humour. In 1980, David Gerstein realizes his firts "sculpted figures". The latter are made of cut steel, a practice that helps him going beyond scuplture and 3D painting. And as he sees big, he is the creator of the tallest public sculpture of Singapour called "Momentum". Eventually, David Gerstein is aiming to realize an art project for the many. He wants to realize a limited series for a reduced price, still as to make art even more accessible.

A PROPOS
